Chiral Hydrobenzoin: a versatile tool for asymmetric synthesis

Chiral hydrobenzoin ((S,S) or (R,R)-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanediol) is one of the C2 symmetrical diols, and the application in the asymmetric synthesis has extended recently. We developed the synthetic method of chiral hydrobenzoin by asymmetric transfer hydrogenation, and have started the commercial production. Chiral hydrobenzoin has the various features that the previous chiral ligands don't have. In this presentation, we will showcase the chiral chemistry of hydrobenzoin and the application as asymmetric ligands, chiral auxiliaries and chiral source in asymmetric synthesis.
